Actually it’s interesting because even the thieves in Katwe are so friendly – it’s only afterwards that I find out from Aggie that I was conversing with a renowned personality! Should I let that scare me? No. There’s a reason why these guys are the way they are – more probably a whole string of reasons – different for each guy. Bad choices & outright rebellion are likely, but many of the reasons very probably involve hurt & neglect.
These are the people God’s heart and hand most especially stretches out to in this world. He knows them fully and completely and yet pursues them lovingly. When we share with them that Jesus didn’t come into the world to condemn them for their sin, but to actually save them from it…and to enable them to experience true, genuine, exhilarating life, should we be surprised that they accept, en mass even? Probably not! It’s awesome news, and I remember my own heart and life gradually opening up to it, like a flower to the warmth of the sun. But I am always surprised…and that’s because it’s a miracle – it’s the power of God at work! Surprising and Spectacular! Of course God has been at work in both Katwe and these guys’ lives many years before any of us appeared on the scene, but it’s an awesome thing to see and be a part of. What a privilege!
It’s especially awesome for Aggie and our kids, as they know many of these guys & grew up with them. Below is a conversation between Aggie & our eldest boy, Brian, after he saw Aggie’s post about this on Facebook. It’s a different Simon that Brian is talking about, but I’m sure there were people who said the same thing when I finally surrendered my life to God 🙂
